Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s Heir Apparent: Bernie Sanders

These times are new to us. The early days of 2016 hold for us a guarantee of a future that will set us apart from any other time in history before us. Technology at a point it’s never been before on this planet. Sci-fi movies’ ideas that only a generation ahead of us watched as children are now a thing of last year. Rebellions, up risings, and revolutions are more common place as masses of people grow tired of redundant political strategies. We become increasingly more nostalgic in our musical and fashion taste from lack of assurances for what the future may hold for us in the 21st century. We often look back to see what times were like in the past and the people of the past to guide us today. Lack of true leadership and fearlessness has made the youth lose faith in our systems and the elders grow tired of it all together. The fight is held in the spirit of the people. The war is now a war of ideas and beliefs. We look for those that came before us as we prepare our lives for the unknown of what ahead of us. Times don’t seem to have changed as dramatically as we would hope in this current century. Tech has advanced, but society remains stagnant in key issues; issues that were the discussion of the time in the 50s and 60s also.

As we view this abysmal cycle repeat itself yet again, we must stop finally and ask the question “How do we finish this once and for all?” The world has had uprisings and protest ever more increasingly in volume, why is this? People are fed up and tired , lied to and robbed. Being broke is now understood by more and more as not the situation brought on by a single solitary family or individual, but instead understood as a reflection of the worsening times. The world now understands in this age of information that they are receiving the shortest end of the stick that they paid to build. Things are not looking hopeful for the average working class family these days and they know it more then ever before.

We’ve seen days that felt like this before. Days were hope was low and faith had to be restored in mass quantities. Power had to be taken back by the people, but first the people had to reminded they were the ones who controlled it all. Someone had to bring that message of resistance and strength to the people, that individual then was Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He then was the great bringer of the news. The news that people fighting for the right thing , for a righteous goal had an obligation to never quit. That true power was in numbers and love. Martin sparked a revolution then that galvanized a generation of this great nation to stand and face itself. The country was forced to take a stand for its own protection and the protection of the future. Those crossroads stand before us once more, paths familiar and worn. Somehow yet again our compass has lead us in another circle – back to this place of confusion and mistrust. Same question for a new people. Will they be stronger and more through than its predecessors? Will these newer generations have wisdom and learn from the mistakes of others? Will they learn from other countries or continue this cycle yet again and again?

A leader is needed again. Someone to remind the people of their true power. A man to bring us the message and the news that we hold the true power and that we are the ones who decide the control. A country begs to be galvanized into something more , more then generations past had accomplished. The nation stand still awaiting someone to fill shoes made so large that the imprints strike fear in the hearts of men who know they are lesser. The people call for someone genuine, authentic, and true. We have been searching for someone – anyone to take up the left over fight that Martin Luther King Jr. was unable to finish for us.

These times are filled with people attempting to lead, but who is fit? Who can unity the underdogs, overlooked, the discouraged, marginalized, hopeless, and downtrodden. The Great Recession has given the people many reasons to become disenfranchised. The established order has failed us all once again. We all stand on the edge of change, but what change? On the edge of victory or the abyss of defeat. We are becoming more poor and more underprivileged, but where is our great leader? Who will save us from unsure decision making and fear now that practically every political and social leader has back peddled, sold out, flip-flopped, ran away, or been taken away (most by our own government) before permanent change could be made.

I’ve never been to Vermont and never had much reason to think about it either, always grouped into those states like Oregon, Rhode Island, and Wyoming. Until a few months ago most Americans were like me also, that is until Senator Bernie Sanders decided to run for President of the United States of America. In the months since his announcement the nations youth has awoken, the poor have begun to speak again, and the disenfranchised have someone to believe that is not of the established franchised process of politics. Rebels have been handed a cause and accepted whole heartedly. Hope is connecting people once again, faith and love are making people stand. Senator Sanders has stepped into shoes not too big to fill since he walked along side the man that first wore them. Sanders is speaking to tens of thousands that also go on YouTube and listen to the speeches of Dr.King that don’t include the phrase “I have a dream.” routinely. People are remembering and becoming more wise. Wise because they get to learn about the challenges, downfalls, and short comings of those that came before them because Bernie Sanders was personally there to witness. Social injustice is now met with revolution all around the world, this is the dialogue of the day. In America we have been presented with a new detour as we stand in front of the age old crossroads. Our one time only opportunity to take a road less traveled, political revolution the likes of has been unseen since the election of Nelson Mandela in Africa those decades ago. We have a true chance now to fight back without guns, without Molotov cocktails, bricks, bombs, and rocks. We have a chance to be nonviolent and more loud then ever before. We have a chance for the second American Revolution to be louder than the first.

Bernie’s ideas are directly that of Martin Luther King Jr’s placed in the new millennium. Civil,as in civilian, rights for all. The civil right to health care, education, mandatory living wage, just judicial systems, freedom of privacy, gender equality, and the pursuit of happiness. The civil right to a truly democratic society not bought by thieves and thugs. The civil right to fair banking practices and fees. As Dr. King was planning a Poor People’s March in the months before his assassination, Sanders is pulling the working class and poor together finish that march. Marching to the polls to tell the elite and establishment principalities that we will now long stand still, let you run us over, let you rob us, or kill us. We the people demand that our government works in our best interest first before the best interest of itself. We the people demand that this year be the last year we see this cycle and face the question of “How do we finish this once and for all?” Enough is enough and we have decided to give diplomacy one last great chance. In the face of history and in the face of mistrust, in the face of fear and in the face of contempt we have decided to hear Senator Sanders out and truly come together to accomplish a dream had so long ago. We the people have chosen a road less traveled in hopes it will finally guide us home. The last great push to once again lead the world and show it that uprisings, rebellions, and revolution take many forms but the best form is a democratic one. For 51 years we have been asking “Who will be the successor to a king?”
Half a century of asking and then in Burlington, Vermont with its small population of 42,417 a man stood up with a wrinkled suit and uncombed hair waving his hand has he spoke out. He has a few ideas that we haven’t heard in a long time. The people recognize the Senator from Vermont, he may now take the stage.

The Keynote Campaign

http://www.TheKeynoteCampaign.com 16#TheKeynoteMovement-800X800_HB

Are you ready for something different in your list of reality TV options? Yes, much different, like our brand new and the very first inspirational business reality TV Show based on the #1 fear in America?

Imagine a Reality TV show where:
· People don’t cheat to win.
· People don’t fight every five minutes.
· The cast is NOT coached to be negative, ratchet and demeaning.
· Each episode empowers you through entertaining content how you can grow in your life and/or your business regardless of your profession.
Is it even possible? YES, and it’s called THE KEYNOTE!

Convincingly, based on the feedback from all of those surveyed and those who have actually seen a few sneak peeks of this new genre of ‘edutainment,’ we have every reason to believe that you will absolutely love The KEYNOTE.
In fact, the entire Keynote team, director, cast and crew would even go so far as to say that it could very well be “love at first sight.”
Strange as it may sound, the Keynote is an upcoming experience that  many have already fallen madly in love with; not only for its  inspirational, educational and entertaining value but also because of the continuous nuggets of life empowerment coaching  squeezed into  each episode by  none other than, Delatorro L. McNeal, II , MS, CSP, himself.
This young motivator is a seasoned soul, most recently ranked #32 of the Top 60 Best Motivational Speakers in the World, transforming the lives of people from all walks of life for over the past 15 years.
Holding the prestigious CSP designation, which places him in the top 7% of paid professional speakers worldwide,  Delatorro has spoken in 49 of the 50 US states and abroad and has delivered well over 3000 paid presentations to major corporations, professional associations, conventions, pro-sports teams, churches, and leadership conferences. The Keynote_Quote 21_800x800

He has been featured on national and worldwide television networks like FOX, ABC, NBC, BET, TBN, Daystar and Oxygen as well as syndicated radio shows all across America.
After authoring 6 books, over a dozen personal growth and professional development courses and founding The Full Throttle Experience [a 3-Day Annual Leaderpreneurship Conference] he decided to tackle another long term ambition.
When asked what led him to taking on such an enormous task, Delatorro had this to say:12141642_1690172291218663_2613342648592057511_n

“I’ve always had a passion to coach, mentor and develop speakers and authors. I’ve done so for about 10 years now. My greatest dream however, has always been to create and produce a top-quality television program that inspires people to share their stories in a profound and powerful way that inspires others to live their best lives possible. So, 2 years ago, I embarked upon a journey where I shot my own Reality TV Show in my hometown of Tampa, FL. In the middle of the process of conceptualizing the entire project, my mother passed away, and it broke my heart. She had been sick for many years but was very stable until the hospital had to put a trach in her throat. And when she lost her voice, she lost her fight. I was devastated for several months, but I picked myself up continued with my vision of producing THE KEYNOTE. I hired the production crew, built the support team, partnered with my community, recruited the cast, and we made it happen. A few months after that and 15 months following, I began the process of shopping the show to the big networks, in hopes they would pick up the show.  I received rave reviews on the concept, the quality and the direction but most networks thought the show was; too clean, too neat and most importantly too positive.”

I asked Delatorro, to take us behind the scenes and tell us what the essence of The Keynote was all about:

“It was amazing! Nine contestants from all over the US came to spend 5 days and nights in a multi-million dollar MANSION to be personally mentored and coached by yours truly and they all were coming with this one goal in mind…to become The KEYNOTE!
Let me mention also that this mansion was breath taking but to be totally honest, a number of the cast members were giving me a hard time saying that they hardly had time to even enjoy the 10,000+ square foot mansion because over the course of their 5 days, these 9 contestants spent enormous blocks of back to back time learning my insider secrets to speaking, publishing, branding, presentation skills, marketing, product development and many of the things that took me over a decade to learn.
It was high energy, go-go-go from the time they arrived to the time they left and within our time together, not only was their speaking, presentation and business development skills put to the test and pushed to the limits but they were also tasked with impromptu challenges that literally tested their ability to work together and deliver top-notch presentations to extremely diverse audiences.
. It was so inspiring. I get chill bumps just thinking about it. I saw each one of them being transformed to another level of mastery right before my eyes … right then I knew the end result would be nothing less than fabulous. With each day, the tasks got harder and harder and the stakes kept getting higher and higher, and although no contestants got eliminated, their success with each task gave them an opportunity to earn them “The Mic”.
Central to our time together I personally taught the contestants my “12-step blueprint” that I developed over 15 years in the professional speaking industry. Each day the contestants got up to a hearty breakfast prepared by our chef and then bright and early they were given ‘speakertunities’ and challenges to get them one step closer to the ultimate grand prize of landing a 20-minute keynote spot on The Big Stage at my annual Leaderpreneurship Conference, The Full Throttle Experience and the coveted title of…THE KEYNOTE!

There is so much more to share so please be sure to go to our KEY NOTE page listed below but, before I go, as a fellow cast member of season one with a bit of an inside scoop, I’d like to mention that there is still an ongoing argument amidst some of the cast members from both seasons whether Delatorro should even be listed as a cast member!!!

Some are saying that he wasn’t really playing a part at all!

He was just 100%  Delatorro … down to serious business and dishing out speaking tasks and business assignments at the speed of light to cast members who were sleep deprived, nervous and never able to feel amply prepared for what he was going to throw at them next! We’re just saying! We love you Del, you’ve made us all better and thank you for sharing your DREAM with us. May it change the world not just on TV but in real lives everywhere? It has changed ours.

Speaking of dishes, did I mention that each day within the gorgeous Tampa Bay, set of that 10,000+ square foot, 10 bedroom mansion that the cast members were wined and dined with the finest of cuisine created by the culinary skills of  Chef Gaston D. Merideth ?!

Delatorro, my friend, you are alright with me. I don’t care what they say about you.

“Discipline or Disqualification? Discipline is Better!”

I Corinthians 9:24-27 [NKJV] “ Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it. 25And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown.

Therefore I run thus: not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one who beats the air.   But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.”

The thrill of the game, the adrenalin rush, the pulse pounding impact of the watching the last few moments of a close game between rival teams. The spike in blood pressure; the blood curdling and agonizing scream you hear when our team loses …you would think that folk were playing the game themselves.

Yes, SPORTS … if not yourself, the average guy you know loves sports. Get this … with no compensation of any kind and with no physical value being obtained from it whatsoever, most of your friends are hooked on sports like powerful drugs! In fact, depending on the season, may I suggest that some of your friends may even live for the game!

Think of all of the time and money spent on one’s favorite sport and what they will do just to support or connect with their favorite athlete or team. For most of us our connection to sports starts pretty early in life. Whether “pee wee” league or intramural level, many of us tend to take our sports pretty serious.

Gratefully, if you watch them closely, there are so many powerful, life lessons that can be learned from the athlete and regardless of sport, one thing the athlete teaches us is how to utilize discipline in our lives.

See it is the athlete’s daily dose of disciple that keeps him from becoming disqualified. So, with this thought in mind, can we change sports for just a moment?

The sport for now is life and if you don’t mind I need to ask you a few serious questions to see what kind of athlete you really are:

How are you playing your game? Are you even in the game or are you still on the bench? [Out of fellowship]

Are you studied up on your winning plays? [Bible study]

Have you been coming to practice and grinding it out like you are supposed to or have you been taking short cuts? [Sin]

Are you a team player or has it been all about YOU? [Pride]

How’s your diet? Are you eating the right things; body , soul and spirit?[Meditation]

What kind of godliness in your life are you exercising? Have you set proper boundaries to maintain favor with God and man? Are you doing what it takes to earn the respect of your family, friends and those who depend on you? [Real fans]

Do you keep yourself in check with proven, winning strategies or do you let anything go in your life? How do you handle those temptations that run across your mind from time to time? How do you handle your own shadows? Your own past? Your own secrets? Your own skeletons? Your own insecurities? [Humility & Accountability]

See, there’s a lot of stuff that can get you disqualified from the game …. How will you handle those?

Before I go, allow me to offer you this thought; no matter how uncomfortable it may seem, stay with the discipline! Know this; All great athletes do and it will be no different with you. In fact, being disciplined will even be more important for you in life than it will be for your favorite athlete in the game! Make no mistake about it, you will always have the MOST to win or lose and YOU will always be the real star.

So, I say to you, let your light shine bright as it ought to and as long as it has been ordained to by living with discipline that at times may seem painful.

The reality, however is that you can choose discipline or disqualification BUT discipline is BETTER!

Stay in the game CHAMP.

“A Brother’s Secret” by Author K.L. Davis

After reading the latest book “A Brother’s Secret” by Author K. L. Davis. This book is something that encompasses the reader and paints a vivid picture of some of the issues that go unspoken in some homes. Some people may or may not even understand the dysfunctions that occur. “A Brother’s Secret” sheds some light and offers a feeling of hope for anyone going through similar disparities. I had the pleasure of connecting with her and doing an interview. I am pleased to share the Author K. L. Davis with you.

SM: How are you? Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule. How long have you been writing?

KLD: I’m fine, thank you. I’m blessed and highly favored. I started writing in 1996, but I spent a lot of time researching the process.

SM: You have had some issues with addiction and incarceration and how long did it take to recover? Was it before, during, or after serving in the military? And how did being in the military impact your life?

KLD: I used drugs in the seventies, I had never been incarcerated. My trouble with incarceration didn’t come until after I got out of the military. I served twelve months in Arlington county. The military was the best thing that ever happened to me. I learned discipline, something that I was truly lacking.

SM: Your book “Lost Innocence”, how long did it take you to write it? It hit close to home, how have you used this book or any of your writings to teach the masses?

KLD: I started writing “Lost Innocence” because of a situation I had gone through with a friend. It took me over two years to write this book. There were so many emotions and then the name change. I have spoken at different schools and events to educate the young adults on drug use.

SM: What age groups do you particularly lecture to? In what arenas do you lecture or do motivational speaking?

KLD: Thirteen through eighteen. School settings mostly because I find a lot kids there that really don’t understand. For whatever reason. Sometimes it’s peer pressure or just a class clown. These are the people we need to reach.

SM: What are the issues that you encounter most within your focused groups?

KLD: In each group I try to make sure they understand that I’m not proud of what I did. I don’t want them to be fooled by what I’m saying. A lot of kids think because I write, that I am rich. No. I work a 9-5 so I can have nice things. I let hem know right up front that anything can be obtained through hard work.

SM: I must say, that I had a pleasure of reading your new book “A Brother’s Secret.” What prompted you to write this book?

KLD: I met this family and when I heard their story, I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. At night I found myself thinking about their situation. I had too many what if’s. I felt the need to speak out. I was molested at a very young age so I was aware of molestation but not this form. Although this book was based on someone else’s story, I changed some of the things that really took place.

SM: Do you have any other projects coming up?

KLD: I have several things coming up. “Mama Pearl” is coming out soon and also “Separated by Birth.”

SM: How can people contact you?

KLD: Author kldavis on Facebook or you can email me at kldavis821@gmail.com

“A native of Alexandria, VA, author K.L. Davis is an Army Veteran and mother of two. Make no mistake though, life for this dynamic author has been everything but easy. Having experienced her own addiction, incarceration, and recovery, Ms. Davis has lived a life filled with the grit that many urban authors write about in their books. Perhaps this inside out perspective is what fuels her impassioned character development and dramatic plots. It was most certainly the blueprint for her first novel “Lost Innocence” which she wrote in loving memory of her former pupil that died of a drug overdose during treatment. Ms. Davis felt lost herself and turned to writing as an outlet. Selling her novels independently she managed to make a name for herself. Shortly after she established her own publishing company, Parks & Davis Publications. She has subsequently published 4 additional novels including the sequel to her first venture entitled “A Girl Called Nikki”

Now, author K.L. Davis is inspiring young girls not to make the mistakes that she made. She makes it her mission to help them discover their purpose and positive energy and to serve on a higher platform of respect and integrity.”

The Patriot Act: Friend or Foe

In my senior year at Marygrove College, we had to do what is called Senior Seminar. Senior Seminar we were placed into groups and each group had to do research on a specified topic. The group that I had the pleasure of working with had the topic of Freedom, Privacy, and Security; we chose the Patriot Act as the Policy focus, because it touched on each one. I have listed the names of each person and the particular section that was contributed. This is not the full content of research that was conducted; I pulled out the pertinent details I thought was necessary. However if you are interested in reading the full research article, I will be more than happy to share with you.

1. Policy Described (Sarah Ocker)

The U.S.A. P.A.T.R.I.O.T. Act (Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism, or Patriot Act) is a prime example of Congressional legislation that has affected the safety, freedom, and privacy of people of the United States and many other countries. Sold as a way to make our nation more secure, it is a controversial, anti-terrorist measure that Congress signed it into law in 2001. According to the Department of Justice, the stated purpose for enacting the Patriot Act was …”to preserve the lives and liberty of the American people from the challenges posed by a global terrorist network” (Department of Justice, [n.d], para. 5). The Patriot Act reformed specific governmental operating procedures that hindered their efforts to prevent terrorist attacks on the U.S. homeland. In November of 2002, the Federal Government created the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to implement and enforce the new policies created by the passage of the Patriot Act. The department’s stated purpose is to oversee and unify national security efforts. According to the DHS, their specific mission is to “prevent terrorism and enhance security; secure and manage our borders; enforce and administer our immigration laws; safeguard and secure cyberspace; and ensure resilience to disasters” (Department of Homeland Security, [n.d.], para. 4). The new policies were implemented by widening the scope of power given to the Executive branch of the U.S. Federal government. This allowed for a great amount of latitude to carry out the policies.

2. Formulation of Policy Sponsors/Cosponsors (Shelia McKinney)

The USA PATRIOT Act was introduced on October 23, 2011, by Representatives James F. Sensenbrenner Jr. and Michael G. Oxley (The Library of Congress, 2001). The key players for the policy were Congress and the Administration. The policy was supported unanimously because of the September 11, 2001, attacks. On their website The Department of Justice states that the purpose for The PATROIT Act, “the policy was designed to protect innocent Americans from the deadly plans of terrorists destroying America and our way of life” (Department of Justice, n.d.).

4. Benefits (Shelia McKinney)

Social. After the September 11, 2001, attacks, Americans were in a state of panic. Their sense of security diminished and life, liberty, and happiness seem to be a thing of the past. As it appeared, many Americans did not feel safe on U.S. soil any longer. According to the Department of Justice the USA PATRIOT Act, was to preserve the lives and liberty of the American people from the challenges posed by a global terrorist network (Appalachian State University online, 2014).

5. Costs (Marquetta Turner)

The cost of the Patriot Act economically supports and gives the government full range of control over the United States citizens. It contradicts and/or conflicts with other constitution rights of the United States citizens. It is monetary gain for the government, military and programs such as Homeland Security. The same benefits that support our government are taking a toll on the citizens emotionally. Emotionally when it comes to the safety and security of our lives and loved ones we trust our government to make the best decisions for the majority, but the majority is never heard and that causes an emotional strain.   Although the Patriot Act is supposed to work in the citizen’s benefit of protection from terrorist etc., it is the same policy that is violating our human and civil rights. It bears a lot of room for laws to be distorted, misinterpreted, and abused, which does damage the citizens emotionally. The government is allowed to get away with this, because of propaganda usage.

2. Effectiveness (Marquetta Turner)

The policy is set to protect United States citizens against terrorism. It works to help lower crime. However the cost of that protection is allowing the government to single us out without probable cause. The cost is allowing the government to tap into our telephones. The cost is allowing the government to come into our home without warrants, permission, or without Miranda rights being read. The Patriot Act allows the government to tap into third party companies, organizations, and businesses in the name of national security. We want to be protected, we want freedom, and we want privacy, but all those are being violated by governments Patriot Act.

A few facts about the Patriot act.

    1. Section 213 sometimes called a sneak and peak, it means that a court can approve a search warrant. They can come in when you are not home, search your house and download contents of your computer and not tell you.
    2. You are arrested, and you don’t know why? Under the new immigration policies, you are on your own.
  • Section 215 of the patriot act states government can easily obtain bank records, computer records, medical records, library records and even book store records, especially Social Media- just to name one facebook Messenger.

  1. The government is consistently trying to undermine the remaining protection of the 4th amendment provides.
  2. Thousands of students are brought in to speak to the FBI without any assumption of guilt at all. Visits of many Arab organizations by the FBI without any reason.
  3. One of the disturbing aspects of the patriot act is that it institutionalizes the discrimination against immigrants.
  4. It is estimated that 85% of the cases currently prosecuted under the patriot act are not related to terrorism.
  5. The patriot act has given the government vast new powers in the way terrorism is defined and lets them use them for almost any crime.
  6. Stop and frisk laws are also a part of Patriot Act

This all violates our freedom, security, and privacy
